The US has begun reducing military personnel at bases in Jordan, Qatar and Kuwait, while diplomatic posts across the region are also cutting staff, NBC News reported.
The drawdown mirrors precautions taken around the start of the Iran war in February and is part of US military planning as Trump considers renewed strikes on Iran. No final decision has been made.
The US Embassy in Saudi Arabia has meanwhile moved to “ordered departure,” leaving only emergency staff.
Asked why American diplomatic personnel were being pulled out, Trump replied:
“I don’t know that they are. I wouldn’t know that.”
Meanwhile, the US and Israeli militaries have developed plans for renewed strikes against Iran after the US midterm elections, with preparations advancing for a potential short but intensive campaign, The New York Times reported Wednesday.
