Netanyahu planned to launch a large-scale attack against Iran in early October

Netanyahu planned to launch a large-scale attack on Iran in early October, but Trump opposed it, fearing that a new war might break out on the eve of the U.S. elections.

According to the Financial Times , Netanyahu had already ordered the military to prepare a multi-day campaign of strikes against Iran, set to coincide with the weekend of October 10. The targets included nuclear facilities, power plants, and government headquarters. However, Trump strongly objected, and the operation was called off.

Ahead of the congressional elections, Trump has no need for a war or another spike in oil prices. Netanyahu’s motives are more apparent: elections in Israel are set for October 27, and a new phase of the war could bolster the Prime Minister’s election campaign.

Previously, Axios reported  that U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had arrived in Israel on an unannounced visit. At the Ovda airbase, he met with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and National Security Council head Ben-Ezra. Representatives from the United Arab Emirates also took part in the meeting.

  1. Yair Golan, leader of Israel’s opposition Democrats party, said Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “completely lacks the legitimacy” to launch a war ahead of Oct. 27 legislative elections.

His remarks came after The Financial Times reported that US President Donald Trump had rejected Netanyahu’s plan to strike infrastructure and nuclear facilities in Iran, a military campaign that was reportedly set to begin on Oct. 10.

Trump opposes any military escalation ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm congressional elections in the US, fearing negative repercussions for the Republican Party's electoral prospects, according to the report.

Golan, also a former deputy chief of staff of the Israeli army, said in a post on US social media platform X: “Netanyahu is a sick and weak leader clinging to power by force, willing to put Israel’s security at risk to save himself.”
