A Mirage 2000D from the 2/3 "Champagne" fighter squadron at Nancy-Ochey air base crashed near Rogéville in Meurthe-et-Moselle around 22:40 on Tuesday evening while returning from a mission, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces says.
The two-seat ground-attack jet was carrying a pilot and a weapons systems officer. One body has been found and is awaiting identification, while the search continues for the second crew member.
Safety and judicial investigations have been opened into the cause.
It's the deadliest Mirage 2000D accident since January 2019, when two crew members from the same base were killed in a crash in the Jura mountains.
