FT: Europe may offer Putin two options for ending the conflict

Financial Times columnist Gideon Rachman has reported that Europe might present Russian President Vladimir Putin with two scenarios for ending the conflict in Ukraine.

The first involves freezing the conflict along the current front line, with guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO. The second entails Kyiv ceding the remainder of the Donbas to Russia in exchange for NATO membership.

According to Rachman, both options would be perceived as a betrayal within Ukraine. However, given the strong public desire for peace, Zelensky might be able to persuade citizens to accept either one. At the same time, Europeans are far less confident that Putin would agree to either of these proposals.

Nevertheless, in Europe, there is an increasing sense that direct involvement in peace efforts and the negotiation process with Russia has become a necessity. A telephone conversation between European leaders and Putin may take place in the near future; communication channels for this are already open.
