Cuba comments on the overwhelming rejection of the U.S. blockade at the UN

Cuban authorities celebrated the overwhelming support received, once again, at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly against the economic, financial, and commercial blockade that the U.S. has maintained against the island for more than six decades.

"The world has once again spoken out, by an overwhelming majority, against the blockade—even in the face of the crudest pressures and blackmail from the U.S. aimed at changing the outcome of this vote," stated Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

The draft resolution, titled "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba" received 130 votes in favor, 17 against, and 25 abstentions.

In this thirty-fourth instance in which the end of the embargo has been brought up for debate, the traditional votes against it from the United States and Israel were joined by those of Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Ukraine, among others.
