The United Arab Emirates has halted flights operated by Iranian airlines since midnight to comply with US sanctions, ISNA news agency reports, citing a spokesman for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization.
It was reported that flights operated by Iranian airlines to Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan have also been suspended.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier claimed that operations of Iranian airlines would be discontinued globally starting September 23, under the threat of US secondary sanctions.
“When Iranian airlines land at an airport, you cannot provide them with fuel, you cannot provide them with landing services, you cannot sell them tickets, or you will be knocked out of the dollar system,” Bessent told CNBC on September 21.
