India has warned that the new US measure aimed at imposing sanctions on buyers of Russian oil could strain relations between New Delhi and Washington and disrupt global energy markets.
The warning came after the US House of Representatives passed the relevant legislation.
With this move, the US House of Representatives passed a comprehensive sanctions and tariff bill designed to increase economic pressure on Russia over the war in Ukraine.
The bill has now been forwarded to US President Donald Trump for his signature. It authorizes him to impose high tariffs of up to 100 percent on China, India, and other countries in order to reduce their dependence on Russian energy.
India's Ministry of External Affairs stated that it had taken note of the bill's passage. New Delhi had discussed the matter with various US counterparts over the past few months and had "very clearly" outlined the potential impact on bilateral relations and the international energy market.
