Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the left-wing party France Unbowed (La France Insoumise), has unveiled an electoral platform for next year’s presidential election that proposes a gradual withdrawal of France from NATO, beginning with its exit from the alliance’s integrated military command.
"We have no business being in NATO or in American wars," he declared on November 7 during a rally in the Paris suburb of Le Bourget, Reuters reports.
As an alternative to the Atlantic Alliance, Mélenchon proposed that France build a "global front of non-aligned countries."
The party's official platform, released the day before, even as the country remains roiled by protests—includes the nationalization of defense companies and the rejection of the U.S. demand to allocate 5% of GDP to military spending, Politico reports.
Regarding Ukraine, La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) does not explicitly promise to halt military assistance, but it insists on the need for a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Russia, one that should be based on "collective security guarantees, both among the belligerents and with the rest of Europe."
