On October 28, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared three days of national mourning following a train accident at the Urda station in the province of Toledo, which claimed the lives of at least 68 people.
"Today, Spain is in mourning, and we extend our full solidarity and sympathy to the families of the victims and to those who were injured; for every person who died today represents shattered families and profound suffering," he said, as quoted by the newspaper Tribuna de Segovia.
Sánchez noted that the authorities’ current priority is to support the families of the deceased as well as the survivors. In this context, he highlighted the importance of the work being carried out by public services, specifically, by representatives of the emergency management and civil protection agencies.
The newspaper El Pais identifies human error, occurring against the backdrop of a signaling system failure, as the primary cause of the accident.
It is believed that an employee of the company Adif authorized the departure of a Renfe train, even though the track was already occupied by a train operated by Iryo.
