Slovakia and Hungary reject new 70-billion-euro loan for Ukraine — Fico

Following the EU summit in Brussels, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that Bratislava is not prepared to contribute to the provision of an additional 70 billion euros for Kyiv through 2027.

According to him, Hungary has taken a similar position.

Ukraine had requested these funds in addition to the 90-billion-euro loan package for 2026–2027 that had already been agreed upon by the European Union.

At the summit, Zelenskyy stated that the war would cost Ukraine 155 billion euros by 2027 and called on European nations to provide additional funding.

Fico also described the attempt to link the financing of Kyiv to negotiations regarding the EU budget for 2028–2034 as dangerous. He noted that Slovakia is willing to assist Ukraine in areas such as education, road infrastructure, and energy, but not through new loans.

The EU summit did not reach any new financial decisions concerning Ukraine.

  •  Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who attended Friday's European Council meeting, noted the extraordinary unity among European politicians on issues concerning Ukraine.

"Everyone understands that Ukraine is the number one issue. It was the number one issue, and it remains number one… There hasn't been this kind of unity around Ukraine in a long time," Zelenskyy said while answering questions from journalists on Saturday.
