Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in northern France, was among those attacked by masked Israeli settlers in Taybeh, near Ramallah, the last Palestinian village whose population is entirely Christian.
His town council voted earlier this year to twin Aulnoye-Aymeries with Taybeh, and promised to bring humanitarian aid in the autumn.
The delegation, which included diplomats from France, Belgium and Poland, as well as the French consul in Jerusalem, was visiting during the olive harvest
Around seven to ten masked settlers armed with sticks arrived on ATVs, surrounded a diplomatic vehicle, demanded ID documents, then smashed the window of a Belgian consulate car with stones.
Footage shows the mayor lying on the ground after the attack.
Israeli police say they have opened an investigation "following footage circulated online."
