Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who was defeated in Brazil’s presidential election and subsequently fled to the United States amid a money-laundering investigation, has declared himself the legitimately elected head of state. He posted a letter to this effect on his social media account on X on October 28.
"I address the Brazilian people and the international community as the legitimately elected president of Brazil," the senator’s message reads.
The politician also reaffirmed that he does not recognize the election results. He further thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for hosting him in the United States.
On October 27, the television channel CNN Brasil, citing sources close to the politician, reported that Bolsonaro had fled Brazil for the United States. The article claims that the primary reason for his departure was a fear of arrest, following an order by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to seize the passports of Bolsonaro’s family members. The Associated Press later learned that Bolsonaro and his family would be granted visas to enter the U.S.
That same day, President-elect Lula da Silva criticized his rival for fleeing, describing his opponent’s decision to leave Brazil as a shameful and disgraceful act. It was later reported that Bolsonaro had arrived in Miami with his family.
