Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan of Florida’s 11th Judicial Circuit has signed an arrest warrant for 95-year-old former Cuban leader Raúl Castro in connection with the destruction of two civilian aircraft in 1996, according to a report by NBC 6.
The warrant was issued at the state level in Florida. State Attorney General James Uthmeier intends to present details regarding the case at a press conference at Florida International University.
The investigation concerns the destruction of two Cessna aircraft belonging to the Cuban exile organization "Brothers to the Rescue" on February 24, 1996. According to the U.S. investigation, Cuban fighter jets shot down the aircraft over international waters. Four people were killed, three of whom were U.S. citizens. At the time, Castro held the position of Minister of Defense of Cuba.
On May 20, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against Castro and five other Cuban nationals. They face charges including four counts of murder, two counts of destruction of aircraft, and conspiracy to commit the murder of U.S. citizens. The Department indicated that the defendants could potentially face the death penalty.
