The car producer's plant in Germany's Lower Saxony region is set to partner with Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and investment Aurelius Capital to manufacture components.
The defense turnaround is expected to successfully save about 1,400 of the site's 1,800 jobs that were otherwise headed for elimination under VW's broader 100,000-person global workforce downsize.
As part of the partnership that starts in 2027, the site will manufacture:
- Iron Dome components
- Military vehicles
- Missile launchers
- Support equipment and power generators
