Iran’s IRGC says two oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after attempting to pass through an “unauthorised route”, while its electronic warfare units captured two US LUCAS drones intact.
In a statement carried by Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, the IRGC said a large oil tanker struck a mine and caught fire last night while navigating the southern passage of the strait..
A second supertanker caught fire while exiting the eastern section of the waterway, and a tugboat that deployed to extinguish the blaze subsequently burst into flames.
The IRGC added that its naval electronic warfare units took control of two invading US LUCAS drones, forcing them to land safely before seizing them intact. The statement blamed US insistence on directing vessels through mined channels for imposing heavy financial and insurance costs on American taxpayers and regional allies.
