"We feel anger and shame": Macron speaks out in an urgent address following two days of unrest

It was only on the second day that the French president promised to punish those who took part in the looting and pillaging severely, and called on the government to take measures to prevent further unrest.

"How could French people burn down the Limoges town hall, the tourist office in Lyon, or break into the Marseille town hall? How did things reach this point?" Macron asked.

"There will be no impunity," the president emphasized, demanding that both looters and those who attacked state institutions be held accountable.

Macron acknowledged that the French people are understandably angry about rising fuel prices in the context of the war with Iran, but urged that peaceful protesters not be confused with those participating in the unrest.

"Tonight, we all feel anger. We also feel shame when we see the destruction that has taken place on our streets," he concluded.
