A tanker caught fire in the Black Sea near Sochi, and authorities have closed the Sirius beaches to vacationers.
The 23-member crew of the attacked tanker (all Indian nationals) has been rescued; according to preliminary information, there are no injuries.
Authorities have reported no excess levels of pollutants in the Sirius area resulting from the burning tanker.
The Russian Ministry of Transport stated that efforts to extinguish the burning oil can begin once the intensity of the fire subsides, noting that sufficient resources and personnel are available.

The concentration of contaminating substances in the Sirius Federal Territory remains within the maximum permissible levels despite the fire aboard an oil tanker in the Black Sea nearby, Sirius head Dmitry Plishkin said.
ReplyDeleteEarlier, the Russian transport ministry reported that the Aframax Rio tanker was attacked by unmanned surface vessels of the Black Sea coast. As a result, an open oil fire is currently occurring.
"According to air quality monitoring data, pollutant concentrations in the Sirius federal territory remain multiple times below maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) and pose no health threat," the statement reads.

"Se podrá comenzar la extinción después de que disminuya su intensidad, cuando sea posible el acercamiento seguro de los buques de rescate al petrolero. Las fuerzas y medios disponibles para liquidar las consecuencias son suficientes", indicó el organismo tras una reunión del Estado mayor para evaluar la situación.
