U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on October 8, during his visit to Portugal, that his country never infringes upon the sovereignty of other states.
"We have a solid and regulated relationship with Portugal, just as we do with each of our NATO allies, and we follow those protocols at all times. We follow those protocols. We would never violate any country's sovereignty," he affirmed.
According to the senior official, "that is not how allies behave." "So, I am not going to go into the details of conversations that may or may not have taken place," he added.
"Suffice it to say that we have protocols in place governing our presence here and the way we use our bases, and we always follow them out of respect for, and in compliance with, the agreements we have with our NATO allies," Rubio summarized.
