Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, lawmaker Cilia Flores, as an extreme action by the West, a sign of Western powers attempting to maintain their influence during a period of global order transition.
"The West will never again be the primary player, the one that sets the agenda. It is resorting to all manner of excesses and embarking on unprecedented adventures. One need only look at the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife," the foreign minister stated during an event for university graduates joining the Russian diplomatic service.
He also added that the world is at a turning point, marked by the end of Western hegemony and the emergence of a multi-polar and poly-centric international system. Western countries are attempting to preserve a dominance from which, in his words, they have benefited for centuries.
