Israeli forces and settlers are seizing more land and carrying out construction work to establish a new settlement on Palestinian land east of the village of al-Majd, southwest of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reports.
Wafa added that the work began with the participation of Israeli soldiers and settlers.
Yasser al-Masharqa, head of al-Majd’s village council, told Wafa that the settlers have named the new settlement “Majd” in an attempt to take the village’s name as well.
Al-Masharqa said Israeli forces began gradually seizing land east of the village in October 2023 and have barred residents from reaching it since, taking over more than 2,000 dunums (200 hectares or about 500 acres) of farmland and grazing areas that are the main source of income for many residents.
He warned that the building of the new settlement threatens to deprive residents of access to more farmland around it.
