Eight members of the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln’s strike group, which faced scrutiny over conditions on board following an exceptionally long deployment to the Middle East amidst tensions with Iran, attempted suicide, Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao confirmed in a letter to Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
According to the letter cited by CNN, one crew member jumped overboard in August but was rescued, while another attempted to do so in March and was stopped by shipmates.
Details regarding the other six cases remain unknown.
The USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Diego, California, in November and was deployed to Persian Gulf waters in January amidst tensions with Iran.
During the war that began on February 28, it participated in combat operations as part of Operation Epic Fury and in the naval blockade of Iran.
The aircraft carrier's prolonged deployment in the Middle East, spanning 286 days at sea, was marked by reports of extreme crew exhaustion and mental health issues, as well as supply shortages.
