US President Donald Trump missed an opportunity to steer the conflict with Iran toward de-escalation by rejecting Tehran’s offer last week, Bloomberg reports, warning that the conflict could drag on as neither side appears willing to compromise.
Trump is “playing hardball” with “growing confidence,” according to the publication. US media have linked this to reports of rising oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz since early September, as well as a recent wave of US restrictions on Iran’s aviation sector, now backed by Gulf states.
But November Brent crude futures were trading at $104.14 per barrel as of September 29, while WTI remained above $90. US naval escorts, and maneuvers involving satellite companies to conceal ships’ movements through the strait are complex and costly, while the risks remain, experts say.
Tanker rates are also at record highs, keeping upward pressure on oil prices, according to OilPrice. When it comes to US air travel sanctions, many countries, including Russia, China, Malaysia, Armenia and Pakistan, are defying them.
