On the first day of U.S. President Donald Trump's two-day visit to Ireland, a journalist asked him on Saturday what message he had for Irish people who are paying 40% more for home heating fuel than they were before the war in the Middle East.
"As soon as the North Sea opens up, prices will come down," Trump told the press after meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin.
The leader thus urged for expanded exploitation of North Sea reserves, arguing that increased production would allow for a reduction in consumers' fuel costs.
Donald Trump has been urging the United Kingdom for months to expand oil and gas extraction in the North Sea. According to the leader, tapping into these reserves would help stabilize Europe's energy supply amidst the crisis caused by the war with Iran, TIME reports.
The British government banned the granting of new licenses for North Sea oil and gas drilling as part of its commitments to achieve net-zero emissions.
