The far-right opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has snatched victory from the Social Democrats in the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
This is according to exit poll data published by the television channel ARD:
The AfD secured around 37% of the vote, followed by the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) with 35.5%. The Christian Democratic Union—led by Friedrich Merz—garnered only 5.5%, marking the worst result for the conservatives in the history of their participation in state elections.
Previously, polls had placed the SPD in first place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Visibly shaken, Merz declared the results "a catastrophe."
