EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas cancelled the launch of a new high-level defense group on Sunday following opposition from several member states, amidst internal friction regarding the future of the European External Action Service (EEAS), Politico reports.
The initiative was scheduled to be unveiled this Monday in Brussels, with the expected participation of around 150 people from EU institutions, think tanks, universities, and NATO.
Kallas described the group as a forum to bring together "the brightest minds" and generate proposals capable of addressing European defense shortcomings very quickly and with maximum efficiency.
However, according to a European Union (EU) official, "some member states felt that this was not the right path to take at this time." "After some discussions with the ministers, we have decided not to proceed with the initiative; we are looking for new ways of collaborating with the member states," the official added.
