The Argentine judiciary has ordered a halt to the commencement or continuation of work on the Sea Lion oil project in the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands.
This move marks a new escalation in Buenos Aires' offensive against hydrocarbon exploration in the archipelago, occurring amidst rising tensions with the United Kingdom over the territorial dispute.
The injunction was issued by Federal Judge Mariel Borruto of Río Grande and applies to Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Limited, according to TN.
The ruling mandates the suspension of drilling operations, subsea installations, and the start of production.
It also prohibits specific financial transactions intended to carry out the project and requires that regulatory authorities and stock markets be notified of the legal proceedings.
Borruto clarified that this is a precautionary measure and, therefore, does not constitute a final ruling on the companies' liability. The judge had already asserted jurisdiction last week to hear the lawsuit against Sea Lion, reasoning that potential environmental impact could affect resources subject to Argentine jurisdiction.
The companies must submit a sworn statement detailing the project's status within ten court days. Among other details, they must outline the construction and drilling schedule, the status and location of the wells, the contracted floating units, and the companies participating as contractors or subcontractors.
