According to exit poll data, the right-wing populist party "Alternative for Germany" is winning the state election in Saxony-Anhalt by a wide margin.
Based on an exit poll commissioned by the broadcaster ARD, the anti-immigration, nationalist "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) is garnering 44.5% of the vote.
The CDU, the party currently in power at the federal level, is running second with just 18.5%. Support for the party in this East German state has plummeted by more than half since the last election, when it secured 37.1% of the vote.
According to an initial forecast by Infratest dimap based on exit polls, the parties performed as follows (figures in parentheses indicate the change compared to the previous state election):
AfD: 44.5 percent (+23.7)
CDU: 18.5 percent (-18.6)
Die Linke: 9.5 percent (-1.5)
SPD: 8.0 percent (-0.4)
Greens: 9.0 percent (-3.1)
BSW: 5.0 percent (__)
FDP: 2.0 percent (-4.4)
This results in the following seat distribution:
AfD: 39 seats
CDU: 16 seats
Die Linke: 8 seats
SPD: 7 seats
Greens: 8 seats
BSW: 5 seats
The Magdeburg state parliament has a total of 83 seats; consequently, the AfD would not secure an absolute majority.
